Rules of the Road

  • How to avoid becoming roadkill when running in the streets

    • Don’t assume a driver sees you. In fact imagine that a driver can’t see you.
    • Run against traffic so as to view it. You can’t react to things you can’t see…FACT!
    • At a stop sign or light, look for acknowledgment from a driver before crossing there path. Most times people roll through stop signs…especially in Brooklyn (NY). Watch out for those types.
    • Be prepared to jump onto the sidewalk or shoulder of the road.  Try to avoid jumping on the locals cars…there not to fond of that!
    • During group runs, go single file when cars need to pass.
    • Use hand signals when you are preparing to turn. Always good to do, even more so when you were headphones and pump the music.
    • Run with proper ID and a cellphone. Just make sure you don’t lock the cell phone and that you have your emergency contact listed as HOME or MOM, when phones are recovered that’s the search people perform 9 out of 10 times to locate someone close to you.
    • And as always, respect drivers’ right to the road.
